Science in the 19th Century

The term 'scientist' was first used in 1833 by William Whewell who, amongst other things, was a scientist. Scientific advances in the 19th century include:
  • Useable electricity
  • Steel
  • Petrol

These three led to a second industrial revolution from 1865-1900 which included the growth of steam ships, railways and faster/wider means of communication, for example. Other practical and useful machinary that developed includes:

  • Lightbulb
  • Typewriter
  • Telephone
  • Sewing Machine

Other significant advances are as follows:

  • Count Alessandro Volta invents the battery (1800)
